ERA has made a submission to the Senate Community Affairs Legislation Committee's inquiry into the Paid Parental Leave Amendment (More Support for Working Families) Bill 2023 (Cth). The Bill amends the Paid Parental Leave Act 2010 to:

  • increase the maximum period of flexible paid parental leave by 2 weeks each year from 1 July 2024 to 26 weeks from 1 July 2026;
  • increase the reserved period for partnered claimants by one week each year from 1 July 2025 to 4 weeks from 1 July 2026; and
  • increase the number of days that can be taken concurrently by multiple claimants to 4 weeks by 1 July 2025
ERA's submission supports the Bill and makes further recommendations about improving PPL, including adding superannuation to the payment and increasing the allowance to the international best practice standard of 52 weeks. We are also calling for a greater focus on how intersectional disadvantage prevents some people from accessing PPL.
