Global Economic Crisis: Sustaining and Invigorating Women’s Human Rights Agenda
New York
In conjunction with the 56th session of the CSW, this event has been organised by International Women's Rights Action Watch Asia Pacific.
Given the current economic crisis we have seen a significant shift and shrinking of financial support to women’s human rights organisations. The following questions have been plaguing the women’s movement:
- What is the impact of donors, particularly the bilateral and multilateral donors promoting the development agenda with a focus on economic empowerment?
- How to re-shift the focus from cosmetic changes on women’s issues to addressing key structural changes?
- How to ensure donors adopt a holistic rights-based approach to development that places women at the centre as rights holders?
- What is the impact of the increased level of aid to humanitarian work?
- How do we balance the need for funding for critical services against funding for policy advocacy?
- How do we convince donors that focusing only on national level work will be limited if it does not involve regional and international advocacy?
- Why the continued resistance to fund particular regions and countries despite their unmet need for funds?
We call on women’s organisations to join us to share their experiences!
